Windows 7 is feature-packed and has significant performance and power management enhancements over Windows Vista, that oh-so-forgettable operating system that probably will go down in the annals of technology history as the 21st century’s version of Windows Me. Although the performance of Windows 7 left us in the CRN Test Center impressed right from the start, using it with default settings intact we found seven ways to squeeze maximum performance out of Windows 7 for a truly awesome user experience.

1. Upgrade From Vista SP1, Plus Our Take On Hardware Specifications

Based on testing conducted in the CRN Test Center, Windows 7 has no issues in being upgraded from Vista SP 1 on newer PCs. “Newer” in this case means at least a Pentium 4 processor and a minimum of 2 GB RAM on a 32-bit-based PC. If opting for 64-bit, 4 GB of RAM will give you great performance. Note: These requirements are based on our testing and not onMicrosoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s published minimum hardware requirements.

Other hardware requirements would be 16 GB of free hard drive space for the 32-bit install and 20 GB for the 64-bit version.

However, the most optimal install method would be to follow the above hardware requirements and do a clean install of Windows 7. Toss out any notions of upgrading from XP.

2. Turn Off Or Modify System Protection

By default, Windows 7 enables System Protection on the NTFS drive that Windows is installed on. System Protection keeps copies of system settings and previous versions of files that can be restored in case of a system problem or accidental file deletion.

Windows 7 created restore points before significant system events such as a program or driver install. Restore points also are created once every seven days if no other restore points were created in the previous seven.

This restore point creation can conceivably contribute to resource overhead and a possible detriment in system performance. In a corporate IT environment, where there should already be a backup system in place, it makes sense to disable System Protection on end user’s machines. Home users can turn it off as well, as long as they too are backing up files. After all, in case of a system failure, it’s a lot easier to do a reinstall of Windows 7 and then restore files. Disabling System Protection means you are not sacrificing any performance while restore points are being created.

If users still want to use System Protection, they can disable it, and then enable it when they want to create manual restore points. Windows 7 however, does not have a scheduler for creating these restore points, so a user will have to be vigilant about retaining a set schedule.

3. Utilize The Windows Experience Index

The Windows Experience Index assesses various system components on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9. It assigns subscores to the following: the processor’s calculations per second, the RAM memory operations per second, the Aero desktop performance, 3-D graphics performance and the hard disk drive data transfer rate. All of these subscores are then tallied to make the total base score.

Although some argue about the validity of these scores, the index does provide a baseline performance gauge that can be used when upgrading memory, graphics cards and other components.

It is best practice to take note of the base score and subscores before doing any component upgrades, and then after an upgrade, rerunning the assessment within Performance Information and Tools in the Control Panel to calculate new scores.

A score of 2 is the minimum level of sufficiency to perform the most basic computer tasks. For more graphics-intensive tasks, you want to see a score of at least 3.

Next: Tweak Visual Settings

4. Tweak Visual SettingsWindows 7 owes its beautiful interface to the wide array of visual settings available to users. If a pretty desktop is not as important as performance, then it may be a good idea to disable Aero, including the default animated mouse pointers. Users also can opt to disable ClearType, a feature that aids in improving the readability of text on LCD displays found in laptops, Pocket PCs and flat-panel monitors. However, turning off ClearType made a negligible viewing difference on the laptops we tested it out on. Users also can granularly customize visual effects. By default, Windows 7 is set to “Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer.” Advanced users may want to override those settings and deselect system resource eaters such as animated controls and elements within windows, Aero Peek, Transparent Glass and other features.

5. Modify Data Execution Prevention

Introduced in XP SP2, Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that helps prevent malicious programs from running executable code from a system’s memory reserved for Windows and other safe programs.

Unfortunately, it also can be kind of a pain. Users will sometimes see mysterious DEP errors logged in the Event Viewer, and it has also been known to stop the installation of legitimate programs.

By default, Windows 7 turns on DEP for essential Windows programs and services. That may be resource overkill, especially if you are running a system with a newer processor. Many newer processors have hardware-based DEP. This can negate the need for the software-based DEP that Windows 7 provides.

For users without hardware-based DEP, adequate malware protection should be sufficient enough in providing the same kind of protection that DEP offers.

You can disable DEP in Windows altogether with the following command (remember to run with elevated permissions):

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

Users also can choose to run DEP against specific applications and services, provided those applications are DEP-compatible.

6. Customize The Power Management Plan

By default, Windows 7 is set to a ‘Balanced’ power management plan. This is a good option for users, as it gives full performance and saves power during periods of inactivity. However, based on the type of system (for example, a desktop or laptop) and the user’s needs, the Power Management plan can be customized for maximum efficiency.

Users can customize settings such as specifying the time the hard drive gets turned off after a threshold period of inactivity, or if it gets turned off at all. You can opt to turn off the desktop slideshow feature, especially if the system is in a corporate environment where PCs usually have a default background such as the company logo. There also are options to manage USB settings, power buttons and the processor power.

7. Fine Tune User Account Control

Windows 7 remedies rather nicely the annoyance of UAC introduced in Vista. Users now have far greater control over UAC. There is a slider bar that allows UAC to be set as high as “Always notify,” in the case of any system change, to “Never notify.” It’s a safe bet that corporate IT will generally set Windows 7 to “Never notify,” because there are usually user polices and access controls in place in the network.

Windows 7 is shaping up to be a hit for Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT). The level of customization offered to users with these features really adds to the overall user experience and can really maximize performance.

Mobile phone operators in various countries lock phones on their particular network and thus create a massive hassle for users to get them unlocked to use on other networks or in other countries. With this software, users can not only repair their phones but also remove SIM restrictions (network lock and country lock) on their Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Maxon, NEC, Sony Ericsson, Panasonic, Vitel, AEG, and Alcatel phones. You need to have your IMEI number on hand (obtained by pressing *#06# on the keypad). The user will also need to know what operator the phone is locked on before proceeding.

The KDE Community released the 4.3 version of its popular Linux/UNIX desktop environment, representing more than 63,000 code changes by 700 contributors, 10,000 bug-fixes, and 2,000 new features. KDE 4.3 adds numerous improvements to the Plasma Desktop Shell and Application Development Framework, among many other enhancements.

Code-named “Caizen,” release 4.3 offers a wide variety of enhancements to KDE, which competes with Gnome as well as smaller players in the competition for Linux desktop environments. The release is expected to show up in major Linux distributions in a few months.

Improvements have been made to all the major elements of the KDE Desktop Workspace, including the Plasma Desktop Shell, the KWin window manager, Dolphin network- and content-aware file manager, KRunner search and launch system, and SystemSettings menus, says the KDE Community. Some of the biggest changes have occurred with the Plasma Desktop Shell, KDE’s desktop and panels system, which offers customizable widgets.

KDE Plasma Desktop Shell with new Air theme
Sporting a new “Air” default theme (see above), the Plasma Desktop Shell boasts considerable performance improvements, with reduced memory usage and smoother animations, claims the project. Activities can now be tied to virtual desktops, enabling different sets of widgets for each desktop. Running jobs are now grouped in a single progress bar, and animations signify when jobs are running. Additional changes include improved keyboard shortcuts, easier widget creation, and new widgets such as a “Translatoid widget” that channels Google Translate.

Other components of the KDE Desktop Workspace have also been improved, including KRunner, which has an easier plugin discovery feature. The Dolphin file manager, meanwhile, now shows previews of files within a folder, as well as video thumbnails for quick identification, says the project. Dolphin is also touted for improved trash can, configuration dialogs, and network discovery features.

KDE’s web integration features
The KWin window manager is said to work faster, and offers better integration with Plasma themes. Its Klipper clipboard memory tool can now automatically determine a list of applications that can handle a given object for quicker access to the content, says the KDE Community. SystemSettings is claimed to be faster, as well, and debuts an optional treeview for configuration, as well as improvements to “settingsdialogs.”

KDE applications: Click like an Egyptian

KDE has added to and enhanced its list of applications available in the KDE Software Distribution. Major categories are said to include network applications, multimedia, graphics tools, PIM suite, educational applications, games, and utilities.

Among the many listed enhancements in KDE Utilities, the “KGpg” privacy tool, which is used for encryption and signing files, now offers an improved import dialog, and also integrates the “Solid” hardware awareness technology for detecting the availability of a network connection. The Ark file compression utility, meanwhile, now supports LZMA/XZ, and has improved support for other compression formats.

<img src="http://www.desktoplinux.com/files/misc/kde_kde430_games.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" vspace="5" />
Egyptian-themed games

Many of the KDE games now offer a standard Egyptian-style theme, including KGoldrunner’s new “Curse of the Mummy” game, naturally. All the games are claimed to offer more accurate pause, resume, recording, and replaying of games. Additional improved games include KMahjongg, Killbots, and Bovo, and there’s also a new KTron game.

The KDE PIM apps are touted as being faster and more stable. Specific improved functions include the Kopete IM app, KOrganizer, Kmail, and Alarm notifier. A new Bug Report Tool is said to provide a three-star rating of the quality of the data gathered from a crash, and offers hints on improving the quality of the crash data and bug report.

KDE Application Development Framework gains LGPL licensing

The KDE 4.3 Application Development Framework, which is based on Nokia’s Qt library, is now, like Qt, “liberally licensed” under LGPL, allowing for both proprietary and open source development. The framework is also said to support cross-platform development on Linux, UNIX, Mac, and MS Windows.

The framework adds its first code integration from the Social Desktop project (see image below), offering an open collaboration platform. The platform supplies a DataEngine for Plasma applets supporting aspects of Social Desktop, but more features are expected in future releases.

Social Desktop in KDE
Other new development framework features include a system tray protocol developed in collaboration with the Free Desktop initiative. Additional DataEngines include a Geolocation DataEngine using libgps and HostIP, which allows “plasmoids” to respond to the user’s location, and a DataEngine for the Akonadi Free Desktop PIM storage solution, which is said to be much improved. Finally, the framework now provides a PolicyKit wrapper, including an authorization manager, an authentication agent, and a library.

Availability

KDE 4.3.0 is available now for free download. More information, including links to download sites, may be found here.

It’s a great pity that we can’t find a command “women” in unix-like system, or “man woman” will be much more interesting. I’ll develop a program called “woman”, please wait for me.

I have twitter account for couple years, but hardly used it. I used fanfou for alternative. It’s interesting that lots of friends started following me on twitter, so I decided to try twitter.

The very thing I started to try twitter-like server is to find a good client. Login on the web site and post a new miniblog is silly. There are lots of client on twitter app. If you want your twitter client to run on your linux desktop, Twitux is very good for gnome desktop user. Twitux is based on GTK.

It’s quit easy to install a light client, for ubuntu user, just run

Introduction:

This plugin will automatic add links to technorati tags or your blog’s tags where the words in your post match the tags of that post.

The most greatest things is that the plugin will not actually change your posts’ content in order to add links, so it will not hurt your posts. If you don’t want to use this plugin, just deactive it, and all links the plugin generated will automatic disapper just like they automatic come out, then your blog will return to its original status.

Go to Settings->Tag to Link for more information.

Match Rules

Here are some rules when and how the convert take actions. These rules are *only effective* after version 0.5

If you tagged a post ‘hello world’ ‘hello’ ‘world’ and the content of your post is ‘hello world, I’m coming’, then this plugin will add link to ‘hello’, ‘world’, but not ‘hello world’, because there are links already. The rule can be simplily called *Short Tag First*.

If you tagged a post ‘hello world’ ‘hello’ ‘world’ and the content of your post is ‘bigworld, hellod, world’, then this plugin will add link to the last ‘world’, and no links will be added to ‘world’ of ‘bigworld’, or ‘hello’ of ‘hellod’.

System Requirment:

wordpress 2.5+

It hasnot been tested in old wordpress versions, so I don’t know whether it works just right with them. I suggest you update your wordpress, not because of this plugin, believe me, wordpress2.5+ is really great.

Installtion:

Download the plugin

Unachinve it

Upload to wp-content/plugin/

Login to plugin page and activate it

Go to Settings->Tag to Link to change the default settings.
